Freehand on new 27" iMac

Post by lovejoy »

Currently running freehand on new 27" iMac Retina with El Capitan.

Install Parallels 11.
Install OS X Server from CD (call apple to order $20-) use remote disc from any mac or CD drive.
After install - update via software update to last 10.6.x version (this will install Migration assistant to utilities folder)
Install Parallels' Tools via action menu in parallels

Use Migration assistant to transfer user folder & applications folder from former Snow leopard computer or time machine backup.

All Rosetta dependent apps will work without need for new passwords etc... b/c all info will be transferred via migration assistant.

Screen resolutions up to 5120 x 2880 available

Posted this on Facebook and many questions are being asked:
- Are all your fonts working OK?
- Do your files distill to PDF?
- Paste inside?
- Sharing files between Parallels and El Capitain?
- Drag and Drop between Parallels and El Capitan?
- Copy/Paste?

any other comments you have about installation and use of FreeHand.

Thanks!

Answers to Questions:
Are all your fonts working OK - Nearly all of my (4000+) fonts work - Those that don't - didn't work in OS X 10.6.x.
- Do your files distill to PDF? - Yes including all action scripts such as goto page and other Flash Actions
- Paste inside? - Works well
- Sharing files between Parallels and El Capitain? Easy access to El Capitan file system from within Parallels/10.6.8. El Cap home folder mounts as disk within Snowleoparsserver. Other folders can be specified as shared folders between OS's.
- Drag and Drop between Parallels and El Capitan? - Works fine
- Copy/Paste? Yes

Further - The integration seems quite seamless. I can easily specify which network connection to use to access inter/intra/net.
I can use mail program with Snow lepserver or the El Cap. I prefer the El Cap b/c SLserver still has all the MobileMe built in to OS.

After opening Parallels and before launching the virtual OS - I can control multiple settings - Virtual RAM , HD space, network, shared folders etc...

So far all works amazingly steady and faster than before.

I borrowed aThunderbolt to DVI adaptor and connected my previous 30" screen (2560x1600 Res), then opened parallels/OSX10.6server and allocated it to old monitor at full screen resolutions - This felt like working on 2 connected computers using same keyboard/mouse. Drag/drop copy paste all worked well.

It was a lot of screen real estate to control 2560x1600 + 2560x1440 and I opted to stay with the iMac screen sans 2nd monitor.

Those SSD drives are très rapide and I use one for my main Mavericks OSX but want to get one for my Snow Leopard/FreeHand install. Thanks for sharing this!

I posted this tip to our Facebook page.

Hi Lovejoy, can you give me a glue where I can find that os x server (snow leopard)? Because the app store does have only the newest one. :(

Hi Aspensound

The only way to get a snowleopardserver cd is to call apple directly and order through a sales rep or their supervisor.
It is not available online or via the retail stores.

Be insistent, they have a warehouse full of unsold cds' with old OS X.xxx on them

I have a question for you… Have you tried getting a WACOM tablet working with Parallels or Fusion? I had it working in one but not the other. Can't remember which worked. It wasn't fast but that was a year ago. Maybe things have changed?

Some stuff worked - others didn't, the update to parallels 12 from 11 was a mess till the 12.1 update. The current 12.2.0 and the accompanying tools software is stable. My Razor gamer mouse works flawlessly, so does the apple trackpad and keyboard.

It is important to install the Parallels tools software as it bridges between the machines - look for it in the actions menu after u launch the pvm - this solves most if not all the issues -

We all restart our virtual machines every 6 hrs or so as they tend to bog down after intensive use
