Subtract parts for cutting

Hello,
I need to cut the closing part of a R and an A. In Illustrator I used to make a composite shape made the outer contour minus the inner shape. In FH though two shapes like that make a group. "Punch" just deletes the glyph. Any suggestion?

If I understand your problem, you will want to take the outer "R" shape and lay the inner "R-space" on top of it exactly where it needs to subtract. Next choose both shapes and go to Modify>Combine>Punch. That will cut the hole into the letter. See below.
