New: ILLUSTRATOR CC + FREEHAND MX FEATURES

Post by FFH Mark »

Today, Adobe officially announced new features added to Illustrator CC. These are all FreeHand-inspired from the AI vs. FH Presentation sent to them and in conferences after the FreeFreeHand action. They clearly don't include everything from our comprehensive document, but is a good start for those who have chosen Adobe's Cloud subscription:

• Live Corners: Important and long-awaited feature to have adjustable corner options common in FreeHand and InDesign.

• Path Reshaping: FreeHand's "bendomatic" feature using the selection tool to push/pull a straight segment into a curve. No longer a third party add-on to AI.

• Custom Toolset: AI's FreeHand-like Workspace was a joke however this feature allows any tools to be moved into a custom ordered panel and workflow. Set it up to match FreeHand's arrangement and to delete unused tools.

• Pencil Tool: Matches FreeHand's pencil tool to constrain to straight-lines and more precise drawing. Added other features.

One other addition is Perspective Tool enhancements for modifying perspective and live updating of its artwork.

Adobe announced new features added to latest Illustrator CC 2014. Again, these are inspired by FreeHand from our AI vs. FH Presentation last year:

• Pen tool preview: "Rubberband" from FH. Displays a preview of what the will be drawn on your artboard, before you click and drop the next point. Helps to visualize the next curve before you commit to the next point.

• Pencil Tool: Matches FreeHand's pencil tool to constrain to straight-lines and more precise drawing has been updated with an additional Fidelity setting for finer control.

• Anchor point enhancements Easier for FreeHand users, enhanced anchor point controls allow unequal or different-direction handles to be dragged as you draw to control the smoothness of each segment. Change a corner point to smooth without ruining your shape.

• Improved Live shapes All rectangles and rounded rectangles have modifiable corners. Each corner can have an independent radius value, all attributes are retained even when you scale or rotate the rectangle. Rectangles and rounded rectangles now remember all modifications made so you can always return to the original shape of the object.

The latest Illustrator CC 2014 was announced at Adobe MAX this week. Once again, there are FreeHand-inspired features from our AI vs. FH Presentation last year:

• Text box auto-sizing: No more overset text boxes! Now, area type frames resize automatically as you add, delete, or edit text. This is significant coming from FreeHand to Illustrator.

• Curvature tool: This feature comes from the ease-of-use of FH and other vector apps to draw refined curves and straight lines quickly and visually. Although it adds another pen tool to the toolbar, the Curvature tool will place points with a click and the curve flexes around them dynamically. Double-click to create corner points for straight lines. Edit using the same tool.

• Join and trim paths This tool is either a bandaid for the way AI draws or aimed at beginners. I don't recall this problem in FreeHand so it is included here. You be the judge:
