on Mac alternative: eazyDraw
For people who use freehand for layout/print eazyDraw is one alternative. EzyDraw have other user metaphor than usualy freehand, but can do most of layout/print needs, multi page, text-wrap, grandients, bitmap&vector and pdf import, export pdf, tiff, png, jpg and more. And is a cheap alternative. However, the text formating not like to much to me.

But I do not believe that EazyDraw supports CMYK colors, does it? At least not when I last checked it. There are some apps like Inkscape who at least let you export CMYK eps, but you have to draw in RGB mode. For prepress, that's not usable.
For a suitable vector draw alternative, full CMYK support is a must. And there are precisely 5 apps who can do that: FH, Illustrator, Corel Draw, Canvas and sK1. I don't know others (for the Mac) - and once I checked every available Mac vector app I could find.
